Paul Jennings Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro (8th to 16th November 2010)

Climbing Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, was the challenge of lifetime and I have taken away a lifetime's worth of memories from my trip. It was a hugely rewarding experience, and I was proud to have achieved this in memory of my grandad (Edward Rice) and to raise money for a really worthy charity. I'm also grateful for the help of John and the team at MAVSG, my friends, family, and wonderful girlfriend who have all given their own time in helping me along the way.

The trek took eight days to complete, including a six-day ascent and a 2-day descent. Climbing to heights of almost 6,000 metres (18,000 feet), the terrain rapidly changed from tropical heat to desert wasteland and finally to snow and ice. We were supported on the journey by over one hundred local porters, who carried the food and water needed for the entire trip, and set up and dismantled our camps each day. Their warmth and tireless work really help motivate our group.

Sadly, the group fell just short of reaching the Uhuru peak ('uhuru' means 'freedom' in native swahili). This was due to severe and unseasonal snow blizzards which, combined with the -15 C degree temperatures, made an already difficult summit attempt near impossible. This took nothing away from our sense of achievement, however, as we each knew we had pushed ourselves as hard as we could to do our charities and everyone waiting for us at home proud!
